Our groups are working.
In this picture, they are literally working. One group did a "Rake and Run" in their neighborhood to make some new friendships and do some good deeds. And in the midst of it, I'm told they had a blast getting to know one another better.
Who would have ever thought community could be so great?
Oh yeah, God did!
That's why the church, from it's very inception, was characterized by gathering in people's homes and sharing Christ love through relationships and acts of kindness.
Here are some things I love about our groups:
They care for each one another. I'm always hearing stories about the wonderful ways folks in groups start to support one another.
They care for their neighbors. Many groups have "adopted" friends and neighbors of group members- folks who have never been to the group or to a Connections worship service- and make them meals or meet real needs. That's amazing.
They pray for each other. Have you ever had folks really lifting you up in prayer? You know it when it's happening.
They play together. Must confess, had a great time watching the Steelers and eating some wings with some buds last night.
They get into God's word. You have to love it when people take ownership for their learning and get into the bible for themselves.
I could go on, but I'll end with one last thought about why we do groups the way we do.
First, we have created a Connection Group structure because we see it as our job as leaders i the church to support the development of the church n this area. In fact, it's one of our three core purposes (along with worship and mission).
We have created a semester system because we feel it is the best way to create community and continuty. Folks can step out of a group at the end of a semester if they need to, for whatever reason. But more importnatnly, they can re-enlist for their group and keep it going! Plus, new folks can sign up for a group, and a little new blood always energizes a group in some amazing ways.
Some folks will naturally create community and groups will form in their lives.
We had a group recently "spring up" through our evening worship service.
But most folks don't know where to turn or how to get involved.
I think our system is the best way to draw in people who might otherwise NEVER get invited or know how to join a group.
Our groups are in full swing. They wrap up the end of November, they'll have a Christmas party. They will start sign-ups and a new semester in January.
If you've never experienced a group that works, you're missing out on one of the greatest things in life. And great news, we have a way get you plugged into the experience...
Just ask.
