Groundhog Wisdom
Groundhog Day, what a classic!
Arguably Bill Murray's best movie, but of course someone will argue with me.
Bill's character goes through a radical transformation.
From novelty, to narcissism; indulgence to despair; escapism to engagement.
Eventually we see that not just his behavior is changed, but his character.
Though the course of living the same day over and over again, he learns the value of living one day at a time. If you haven't seen it, don't worry, it doesn't ruin the film to know that his character becomes a new person in the midst of living the same day over and over and over again.
This scene opens with the line, "Rita, if you had only one day to live, what would you do with it?"
The question for us this Groundhog Day is even more simple: what will you do with today?
Will you live for yourself, for others, or for God?
Or maybe that's not the right way to phrase it.
Who will you be, for yourself, others and God today?
Ultimately our character will drive what we do with today.
Our character will shine through what we do with today.
Jesus said, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
Don't worry so much about tomorrow this Groundhog day. Six more weeks of winter is inevitable for all us us up north. Just get on living with the kind of character that most glorifies God, loves your neighbors, and reflects well on you.
